Tamar Rowing Club Bulletin

Second September Edition 2023

A second Bulletin has been necessary as there is a quite a bit to share with members after our first committee meeting for the 2023- 2024 Season. Congratulations to Jane Hawkswood who has been re-elected as the Chairperson.

NO DEBT!

First, big news is that the club's loan is now repaid! This is a cause for celebration for sure as we have been chipping away at this since the 2016 flood event and the subsequent rebuild cost.

We can now move forward with saving money for further boat purchases and improvements.

A big thank you to everyone who has shovelled sheep poo, made donations, attended club events.

A HUGE thank you to Treasurer Rae Dowling whose advice and vision has been instrumental in all the figures working towards this goal.  The committee are so excited we have attached the final letter to this bulletin.

MEMBERSHIP NIGHT

The loan debt is repaid, but memberships are the mainstay of keeping the club running with general bills for gas, water, rate, electricity, phone, repairs, maintenance and insurance etc.

Thursday 28th September is Membership night.

We ask as many members as possible please sign up at the club that night and make a payment.  It is important that the forms are updated.  Rae and Jane will be there to help.

  • A reminder that without membership YOU SHOULD NOT BE ROWING FOR INSURANCE REASONS.
  • After the 10th October, unpaid members will have their codes cancelled.
  • We are aware that sometimes money may be tight so please speak with Rae on the night as a payment program can be organised.
  • Online registration will be available if you can’t get there, but the forms must also be completed, not just the payment made.  This includes RT registration.

CLUB CAMP

The camp held Saturday 16th and Sunday 17th September was attended by 24 people.  Although very windy, most of the wind went over the top of the lake and some good rows were had. A tasty meal was prepared by Kim Saturday evening that refuelled everyone for Sunday. Thank you to Co-Captains Jemma and Mark W for all their organisation, Bush for his help and transport of the fleet, the tinny drivers and everyone who helped with food prep and cleaning. Hopefully we will hold another pre season 2024 and more members may be able to attend.

LIFE MEMBERSHIP

At our recent AGM, much-loved club member Helen Foley was made a Life Member.  Helen was away earlier in the year when Andrew Calvert and Fenton Jones were awarded Life memberships.

Life Membership is a special form of membership which may be bestowed upon a person whose services to the organisation of the TRC is agreed to have been sufficiently meritorious. Helen has been an outstanding Tamar member for many years, having rowed, served on the committee, helps organise and run club events and just being a thoughtful, diligent and active club member.

Helen is pictured here with her husband and club member Tim and some of their very proud family.

CLUB SAFETY PROCEDURES

As we move into the 2023 -2024 season, it is timely to remind members to reacquaint themselves with the Safety procedures located on the back of the boat bay doors.

SPEAK UP AND STAY CHATTY

Are there any members who would be interested in attending a fully funded mental health session for the club?

Tuesday 10th and Wednesday 11th October  9am until 4pm each day.

Being held at Relationships Australia , 6 Paterson Street Launceston.

The cost is usually $325. There is a small registration fee that the club would be willing to pay. Please contact the Secretary ASAP if interested so a registration can be sourced.

GREAT NEWS

It was recently announced by Jeremy Rockliff, Premier and Minister for State Development, Trade and the Antarctic, that as part of the Tamar Estuary Vision Implementation Plan, a public pontoon will be built near the bridge at the entrance to the Cataract Gorge. Site of the old club pontoon.

Whilst this pontoon does not address the need for dredging in the canal out the front of the club, it will provide safety certainty for members in the event that the tide is very low and they can’t get off or on the water.  The committee will look at how larger boats could be moved from that area once the pontoon is constructed.  Thank you to Jim Guy, Alan Weeding and Peter Clutterbuck who have been part of this discussion and fingers crossed that further river improvements will benefit the club soon.

COACHES TINNIES

The motors of these boats were all serviced last week ready to go!

WORLD ROWING CHAMPIONSHIPS

Congratulations to Henry Youl who as part of the Australian Men's Quad, raced through to the B Final held in Belgrade, Serbia earlier this month. The crew finished 5th in a very exciting race that saw only fractions of seconds between 3rd and 6th. World class work Henry!

CLUB ROOM FUNCTION HIRE

As members, you are able to hire the Club Function area. The hire of this space generates valuable club funds so if you are looking for somewhere to hold your workplace Christmas function, a birthday (not 18th or 21sts), a family gathering, a baby shower, a meeting or presentation... please email the Secretary .
